COMBINED ANTE-NATAL CARE
The combined antenatal care programme allows you to be under joint care of your GP and obstetrician during pregnancy. This is internationally recognised as the best and most convenient form of ante-natal care. Visits to the Cork Road Clinic that are related to the pregnancy are free of charge once the HSE application form is completed in the surgery. Ideally you should visit one of our doctors as soon as you discover you are pregnant. We will then refer you to your local maternity hospital where you will be seen before 20 weeks for assessment, blood tests and a scan. Subsequently your visits will alternate between the hospital and GP and become more frequent as your pregnancy progresses.
Combined ante-natal care also includes visits to your GP at 6 weeks after the baby is born.
OTHER ANTE-NATAL OPTIONS
We also facilitate those patients who choose semi-private or private ante-natal care by arranging appropriate referral.

Whether it’s testicular cancer awareness in younger men or prostatic issues in older men, we can advise and investigate as necessary. However, we always remain aware that the biggest cause of premature illness and death in Irish men remains heart disease, so don’t be surprised if we bring the conversation around to your diet, your cholesterol or your lifestyle.

Well Person Checks
Well person checks are a specialised medical check-up, tailored to each patient which will provide you with a snap shot of you general health. It is based on a physical examination as well as blood and other tests.
Initially each patient attends an assessment with a practice nurse. This will involve a detailed interview recording your past medical history and habits. Following this, height weight and blood pressure is measured and urine is checked. Blood tests are taken as appropriate for age, sex and medical and family history of the patient. The nurse will advise on a healthier lifestyle for you based on your interview. Blood tests can include a full blood count, kidney and liver blood tests, cholesterol, blood sugar, thyroid test, and a prostate blood test for men where appropriate. Please fast for 12 hours before your nurse’s appointment.
A follow-up appointment with a doctor will be arranged ten days later. At this appointment you will have a physical examination and the doctor will explain to you the results of the tests you had with the nurse earlier.
You will be provided with a copy of all your results to keep.
There will be a separate charge for these medicals, payable by all patients.
If you are interested in getting a snap shot of your health please contact our reception on 022-21579.

Medical card patients
Our staff at the Cork Road clinic care for a large number of medical card holders. If you would like to apply for a medical card or a GP visit card with our practice you can pick up a form at your local health office or download a form here www.hse.ie
It is important to note that while the medical card will cover you for regular attendances and medications it does not cover all GP costs, for example adult vaccinations or driving license medicals and well person checks.
Unfortunately we are only able to see Medical Card holders who are formally registered with the Cork Road Clinic. However, in the case of an emergency OR if you are temporarily away from the area where your doctor is located it may be possible for you to be treated by a doctor in our clinic.
Unsure if you are eligible for a medical card? The HSE webiste has a medical card calculator to help you to find out
